Area Rescue Groups Deserving of Support
Move to ACT is honored to introduce in our monthly newsletter a series on local heart and soul animal rescue groups who provide a vital safety net for companion animals waiting for their forever homes. If you are looking for an optional animal organization as a recipient for your time, talent and/or treasury, please remember these humble and caring organizations. And don't forget the wonderful animals they have for adoption! Heart for DOG Rescue (a 501c3)
...adopted out 175 dogs/cats (and a rabbit) in 2009. The animals come to HFD as strays, but most are pulled from Animal Care and Control. HFD will also assist people surrendering their dog. All dogs are spayed/neutered/vaccinated (age/health appropriate). S/N vouchers are provided for a puppies too young for sterilization and follow-up is done for compliance. Adoption fees are $250-$300. 100% of donations go to the care and treatment of the animals. Foster help and/or donations would be greatly appreciated. Donations are welcome and can be done via Pay Pal available on their website.

Wags will also assist people surrendering their dogs. All dogs are spayed/neutered/vaccinated (age/health appropriate). Wags has a special affection for pulling pregnant females and mothers with newborns. S/N vouchers are provided for a puppy too young for sterilization and follow-up is done for compliance. Adoption fee is $175.00; 100% of donations go to the care and treatment of the animals. Foster help and/or donations would be greatly appreciated. ...placed 220 dogs in 2009! The dogs come into "One Paw's" care as strays (picked up by good Samaritans), from humane societies, animal controls, hoarders and puppy mills. One Paw assists people needing to surrender their dog by taking them into the rescue if room is available. In the case that no room is available, a courtesy posting is offered after temperament is assessed. All dogs are spayed/neutered/vaccinated (age/health appropriate) and micro chipped prior to adoption. Adoption fees range from $100-$200. Each adoption includes a follow-up call at two days, two weeks and two months. 100% of donations go to the care and treatment of the animals. Ringing at Move to ACT
The mtA phone line serves as a crossroads of information for those seeking guidance for themselves and/or animals in crisis: numbers for local shelters, lost and found animals (injured and healthy), animals with behavior concerns, people wanting to know where to adopt an animal, people wanting to surrender animals, and wildlife issues. Over 700 calls were received in 2009.

Animals at IACC to be deprived of $15,000 veterinary care in 2010
At the January 15, 2010 IACC board meeting the city's Valerie Washington announced that $15,000 of veterinary care services will be diverted from the animals at IACC to go to a public purpose grant for IndyFeral. The department of Public Safety approves this allocation each year. If you are acquainted with the medical needs of animals at IACC, you know that veterinary care is the last place to compromise funding. The union, however, will receive their contractual raises while the animals suffer. The meeting can be viewed here.
Request for Removal of HSI Representative David Horth from the IACC Board
In a January 7 letter to Mayor Ballard, representatives of Move to ACT (mtA) and Feral Bureau of Indiana (FBI) asked for the dismissal of David Horth from the Indianapolis Animal Care and Control (IACC) board. Mr. Horth is the Mayoral appointee to the IACC board as the representative from the Humane Society of Indianapolis (HSI). On this same day an ethics complaint was filed in regards to Mr. Horth with the Office of Corporation Council. Mr. Horth is cited for behavior that suggests concealed manipulation of governance that cheats citizens of the transparency necessary for responsible municipal governance.
This filing follows the Mayor's reversal of Mr. Horth's dictate dismissing government cable channel 16 from recording and broadcasting Animal Care and Control board meetings. The ethics complaint can be read here. And don't forget to visit the move to ACT blog here. |
